J. Studying Proverbs 28:11-21
  1. Introduction
    1. Two hundred and fifty years after Solomon, Hezekiah's scribes copied more of Solomon's proverbs from separate works, and they comprise Proverbs 25:1-29:27. (Bible Knowledge Commentary, O. T. , p. 960)
    2. We view some of those collected proverbs of Solomon in Proverbs 28:11-21 as follows:
  2. Studying Proverbs 28:11-21.
    1. Proverbs 28:11 teaches a nobleman (ish, Ibid., Kittel, Bib. Heb., p. 1190; R. B. Girdlestone, Syns. of the O. T., 1973, p. 45-50) who is rich (ashir , Kittel; B. D. B., A Heb.-Eng. Lex. of the O. T., p. 799) is wise in his own eyes, but a reduced, poor (dal, Ibid., p. 195) man with understanding, discernment ( bin, Ibid., p. 106-107; Hiphil = causative) examines him [so as to expose his lack of wisdom] (haqar, Ibid., p. 350).
    2. Proverbs 28:12 asserts that with the [triumphant] exultation (alas, Ibid., p. 763) of the righteous, great (rab, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 912-913) is the glorying (tep'arah, Ibid., p. 802), but with the rise [to power] (qum, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 877-879) of the wicked, [even] the common man (adam , Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., Girdlestone) is searched for (hapas, Ibid., B. D. B., p. 344; Pual = intens. pass.) [hides].

Proverbs 28:13 claims he who covers, hides (kasah, Ibid., p. 491-492; Piel = intensive) his transgressions (pesha', Ibid., p. 833) will not experience prosperity (salah, Ibid., p. 852; Hiphil = causative), but he who acknowledges, confesses (yadah, Ibid., p. 392; Hiphil = causative) and forsakes (azab, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 736-737) them is [greatly] shown compassion (raham, Ibid., p. 933; Pual = intensive passive).
    4. Proverbs 28:14 teaches blessed is the common man (adam, cf. Pr. 28:12) who is continually (tamid, Ibid., p. 556) in great dread (pahad, Ibid., p. 808; Piel = intensive) [of the Lord, ESV, NIV], but he who hardens (qashah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 904) his heart will fall (napal, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 656-658) into evil, misery, distress, injury (ra'ah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 949).
    5. Proverbs 28:15-16 asserts (15) a roaring (naham, Ibid., p. 625) lion and charging (shaqaq, Ibid., p. 1055) bear is the wicked who rules a reduced, poor (dal , cf. Pr. 28:11) people; (16) a ruler (nagid, Ibid., B. D. B., p. 617-618) who lacks (haser, Ibid., p. 341) understanding (tebunah, Ibid., p. 108) is great (rab, cf. Pr. 28:12) in extortions (ma'ashaqah, Ibid., p. 799), but he who hates unjust gain or gain by violence (besa', Ibid., p. 130) will prolong (arak, Ibid., p. 73) days [his life span].
    6. Proverbs 28:17 claims a common man (adam, cf. Pr. 28:12) oppressed (ashaq, Ibid., p. 798-799; pass. ptc.) with the blood of a life principle (nepesh , Ibid., Kittel, p. 1190 and 3 in citing Gen. 2:7 where God made man a nepesh with physical, emotional, mental and spiritual life) [suffers guilt for murdering], until the pit [of the grave] (be'er, Ibid., Kittel, p. 1190; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 91) will he flee [be a fugitive] (num, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 630-631); let no one support, uphold (tamak, Ibid., p. 1069) him.
    7. Proverbs 28:18 teaches he whose walk has integrity (tamim, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 1071) will be delivered, saved (yasha', Ibid., p. 446-447; Niphal = passive), but he whose ways are perverted (aqash, Ibid., p. 786; Niphal = passive) will suddenly (ESV, NIV, KJV) fall (napal, cf. Pr. 28:14).
    8. Proverbs 28:19 asserts he who tills (abad, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 712-713) his land (adamah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 9f) will be satiated (saba', Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 959) with bread (lehem, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 536-537), but he who pursues (radap, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 922-923) vain things (req, Ibid., p. 938) will be satiated (saba' again) with poverty (rish, Ibid., p. 930).
    9. Proverbs 28:20 claims a nobleman (ish, cf. Pr. 28:11) of faithfulness (emunah, Ibid., p. 53) will be greatly blessed, but one pressed, making haste (us , Ibid., p. 21) to gain riches (asar, Ibid., p. 799; Hiphil = causative) will not be exempt from punishment (naqah, Ibid., p. 667; Niphal = passive).
    10. Proverbs 28:21 teaches to pay regard to (nakar, Ibid., p. 647-648; Hiphil = causative) faces [to show favoritism] is not wholesome (tob, Ibid., Kittel, p. 1190 and 2 in citing Gen. 1:31 re: God's wholesome [tob] universe), but for a fragment (pat, Ibid., B. D. B., p. 837) of bread (lehem, cf. Pr. 28:19) [even] a mighty man (geber, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 149-150) will transgress (pasha', Ibid., p. 833).
Lesson Application: May we align with God's fixed moral order in each of these realms for blessing.
