Part V: Proverbs Of Solomon Collected By Hezekiah's Scribes, Proverbs 25:1-29:27
I. Studying Proverbs 28:1-10.
  1. Introduction
    1. Two hundred and fifty years after Solomon, Hezekiah's scribes copied more of Solomon's proverbs from separate works, and they comprise Proverbs 25:1-29:27. (Bible Knowledge Commentary, O. T. , p. 960)
    2. We view some of those collected proverbs of Solomon in Proverbs 28:1-10 as follows:

    1. Proverbs 28:1 teaches the wicked flee (nus, Kittel, Biblia Hebraica, p. 1189; B. D. B., A Heb.-Eng. Lex. of the O. T., p. 630-631) when no one (ayin , Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 34-35) pursues (radap, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 922-923), but the righteous are as confident, bold (batah, Ibid., p. 105) as a young lion (kepir, Ibid., p. 498).
    2. Proverbs 28:2 asserts that with the rebellion (pesha', Ibid., p. 833) of [the people of] the land, many are its princes, chieftains (sar, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 978-979), but with [even] a common man ( adam, Ibid., Kittel; Robert B. Girdlestone, Syns. of the O. T., 1973, p. 45-50) of insight, discernment (bin, Ibid., B. D. B., p. 106-107; Hiphil = causative) [and] knowledge ( yada', Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 393-395), thus (ken, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 485-487) it continues [to exist for] a long time (arak , Ibid., p. 73; Hiphil = causative).
    3. Proverbs 28:3 claims a mighty man (geber, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 149-150) in want, lack (rush, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 930) who oppresses (ashaq , Ibid., p. 798-799) the reduced, weak, helpless (dal, Ibid., p. 195) [is like a] rain (matar, Ibid., p. 564) that prostrates [beats down] (sahap , Ibid., p. 695) so there are no (ayin, cf. Pr. 28:1) crops for bread, food (lehem, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 536-537).
    4. Proverbs 28:4 teaches those who forsake (azab, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 736-737) the Law praise (halal, Ibid., p. 237-239) the wicked, but those who keep ( shamar, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 1036f) the Law engage themselves in strife (garah, Ibid., p. 173; Hithpael = intensive reflexive) with them.
    5. Proverbs 28:5 asserts evil, trivial men (enosh, Ibid., p. 60; Ibid., Girdlestone, p. 50-52) do not discern (bin, cf. Pr. 28:2) justice (mishpat, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 1048f), but seekers of ( baqash, Ibid., p. 134-135) Jahweh discern (bin again) [it] in all respects (kol, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 481-483).
    6. Proverbs 28:6 claims more wholesome (tob, Ibid., Kittel, p. 1189 and 2 in citing Gen. 1:31 of God's wholesome [tob] universe) [is] a man in want, lack (rush , cf. Pr. 28:3) who walks (halak, Ibid., Kittel, p. 1189; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 229-237) in his integrity (tom, Ibid., p. 1070) than the perverted (iqesh , Ibid., p 786) in his ways (derek, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 202-204), and he (emphatic pronoun) is rich (ashir, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 799).
    7. Proverbs 28:7 teaches he who keeps, observes (nasar, Ibid., p. 665-666) the Law is a discerning (bin, cf. Pr. 28:5) son, but he who associates (ra'ah, Ibid., p. 945) with gluttons, squanderers ( zalal, Ibid., p. 272-273) causes shame (kalam, Ibid., p. 483-484; Hiphil = causative) [unto] his father.
    8. Proverbs 28:8 asserts he who multiplies [amasses] (rabah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 915-916; Hiphil = causative) his wealth (hon, Ibid., p. 223) by way of interest ( neshek, Ibid., p. 675) of increment (tarbit, Ibid., p. 916) [with excessive interest], he gathers [amasses] (qabas, Ibid., p. 867-868) [his wealth] to favor [for donation unto] ( hanan, Ibid., p. 335-336) the reduced, weak, helpless (dal, cf. Pr. 28:3).
    9. Proverbs 28:9 claims he who turns aside (sur, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 693-694; Hiphil = causative) his ear from hearing the Law, even (gam, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 168-169) his prayer ( tepilah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 813) is an abomination (to'ebah, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 1072f).
    10. Proverbs 28:10 teaches he who leads astray (shagah, Ibid., p. 993; Hiphil = causative) the upright (yashar, Ibid., p. 449) in the way of evil (ra', Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 948), into his [own] pit [trap] (shehut, Ibid., p. 1005) he (emph. pron.) will fall (napal, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 656-658), but those of integrity (tamim, Ibid., Kittel; Ibid., B. D. B., p. 1071) will get a good ( tob, cf. Pr. 28:6) inheritance (nahal, Ibid., p. 635) (cf. ESV, NIV) [or, take as a possession good things, cf. KJV].
Lesson Application: May we align with God's fixed moral order in each of these realms for blessing.
